December 13, 2010 IP Update

First Lead Project:

First lead project is coming to completion. The party will be this friday (December 17th). it will be casual and holiday themed. Everyone who coming needs to bring in a white elephant gift (around a $5 value). I will be handing out information flyers to all of the seniors during advisory. Location is the Mark in Burien and time is 5:00pm - 8: 30 pm.

Second Lead Project:

Ran into some conflicts. The original plan was to donate th stuf animal to a SAFE volunteer that will ensure the donations will end up in the hands of someone who needs it but she has decided that this is too big of a donation for her to handle. Now I'm still looking for places that will take used toy donations.

IP Updates!

Independent Project #1:

I just currently made a reservation for the Mark Restaurant and Bar in Burien for the senior get together and they are really flexible with things. I reserved their banquet room which hold up to 40 people but if we feel too cramped or if more people show up, they will open the back of the restaurant for us. Space rental is free and we can decorate it anyway we like. Based on student interests, the theme will be Holiday casual/semi formal and we will be playing secret Santa. Someone from our class has already volunteered to be Santa and they will show up with all our gifts to pass out to everyone. The mentor for this project will be Mr. Shiroma.

Independent Project #2:

I'm still trying to find a good place to donate the collected stuff animals to. Right now it looks like it'll either be to SAFE, children's hospital or a shelter of some sort.

Following Project #1: Talent show

From the last time that I talked to Liz, it looks like the gym has been booked and sign up sheets are in the office.  Try out dates have also been decided.

2nd Project Proposal

Executive Summary:

For my second leadership project, I will be putting together a stuff animal drive to give to kids in need or in want of a stuff animal. Doing this will not only help raise awareness within the school for children that may not be as lucky as us, but it also provide a direct way of positively changing the lives of these children. Not every child out in the world has a stuff animal to cuddle with in the cold or just something to play with when they are bored so the stuff animal drive will be a simple and cheap way to supply these kids with something they want. I want to conduct this project because i believe that every child should have happiness of some kind and giving them a stuff animal will be one of the easiest things we can to do give a bit of happiness to their lives. I believe its important as a leader to set an example of what can be accomplished when enough effort is put into it.

Need:
For those of you that have grown out of you old stuff animals, what will you be doing with them. Give them to siblings? what if you don't have any siblings? then you 'll throw them away? leave them sitting there collecting dust at you house? If you don't find anymore need of the stuff animal, then why not donate it to a child in need? That way the stuff animal that you used to love so much can now be in the hands of a new child that also loves it just as much. Much better then leaving it sitting at you house or being thrown away in the garbage right? After all, you don't need it anymore, so give it to a child that does. Change a child's life from just donating an old doll that you no longer need.

Objective:

When this project is over, I would hope that the people who donated feel this sense of fulfilment that they help a child out and I would hope for the children who received the stuff animals to feel a sense of happiness that there are people out there trying to help them out. I would hope that the children feel like they are loved by the world even though they might not be born as lucky as others.

Method:

The steps in achieving this project will be as follows:

1. Ask the school staff to see who has good idea's of where we should donate the collect stuff animals.
2. Spread the word to the school
3. Have a projected start and end date for the donation
4. Take pictures of some donors
5. Wrap up the stuff animals
6. Send them off to the kids.

Evaluation:

If possible, I will be keeping track of some specific stuff animal, take a picture of the stuff animal and its old owner, following it through the shipping process and once that stuff animal have been received by a child, i will ask that child how they feel about their new stuff animal. I will also take a picture of that child and the stuff animal and giving the picture back the the person who donated to see how they feel about that's child response upon receiving the new stuff animal. If both the donor and the child feels happy, then I know my project was a success.

Qualification:

This project will require someone that's a good communicator, organized, and patient, which i have all of the above characteristics so I will be a good person to lead this project. I also love to see people being helped and being happy so I would enjoy putting together this project very much.

Time Table:

This project will only take about 2 weeks to complete. Before I start spreading the word I would make sure that these stuff animals are going somewhere useful. Then I would allow 2 weeks for people to bring in their stuff animals.

Budget:

This project will require minimum to no  cost since all the stuff animals will be donated by student of AHS. The only cost that might be needed are shipping cost which wouldn't be too much.

October 27 (Blogging Entry #5)

1. Starting next week, I will start to go around the school to take a survey on every one's opinions about to the party (to see how many people are interested in going).. If people are not interested in attending, I will be asking them why, and if it is a do-able thing, I will slightly change my project according to what they (seniors) will be more interested in doing. If it was something small like the date, Then I will be taking a survey on which dates people are most available on. When taking the survey about their interest in attending the party, for those that say "yes i am interested" I will also be asking them if they would rather play white elephant or secret Santa. If neither, then they can suggest what else would be a fun game to celebrate the holidays before leaving to break. All of these surveys will help me decided on what to do (what date it should be one, what we should do and also how big of a party will i be expecting to book restaurants).

2. Currently, i am also helping Elizabeth with her project on the talent show. I decided to help with this project because i thought it would be fun to help put together a school event since i have never done it before. I know that this is going to be a big project and a lot of details are involved but seeing the success of the past talents shows, i think the ending product will be worth the work. So far Liz has been getting more people to help out with the talent show and she has discuss with me about the theme that she anticipates the talent show being. It will be Winter wonderland themed and she was thinking of having intermissions in between acts where something funny happens so that the audience doesn't get bored from just watching act after act.

October 19, 2010 (Blogging Entry #3)

Driving Forces

Barriers

- The senior class will get a change to hangout with each other as a whole

- Students will get to know each other better before graduating

- Everyone who attends will feel loved by there class (everyone will get a gift)

- It can build friendship within the senior class

- Students will be reminded that school can be fun

- Everyone will have a great time and will influence them to attend future school events

-People in the senior class are too busy to attend the party

-Can't find a location that will be of easy access to people

-Finding a cheap restaurant that also big enough for parties

-Transportation

-Some people thinking that the party is useless and not willing to go

-Not having a mentor to look over the party

-Getting enough people to help plan, set up and clean up

-Not enough people knowing about the party.

-Kids being over the border during the party (too wild).

- People just complain about food, games and etc.

Top 3 barriers I will attempt to change:
  1. Not enough people knowing about the party and its goal
  2. Transportation/ finding the right restaurant
  3. Getting people to plan, set up and clean up (if necessary)
Barrier #1: Not enough people knowing about the party and its goal

I will be asking everyone in the senior class about their preferences, this way, at least everybody knows what is going on. When final decision have been made, i will also be announcing the get together in the NOTAM. For those that don't pay attention during the NOTAM, i will also be going around telling people about the party so that i make sure that everyone in the senior class knows about it.
Doing this, I will be able to control the issues that can arise because everybody will at least know that there is someone pplanning a get together before winter break and using multiple sources to spread the word will ensure that someone who doesn't read the NOTAM will still know about the party and vice versa. I will also make sure to regularly update people so that they know what final plans are. Once everything has been finalize, I'll give one last notice to the senior class (either talking to them one on one or going to advisories) and ask if they are attending or not.

Barrier #2: Transportation and finding a restaurant

I know that transportation will be a problem in these kinds of events because not everyone lives in the same place and not everyone will have transportation to attend the party. To make sure that this issue doesn't stop me in accomplishing this plan, i will be asking the people who don't have transportation, where they live. If someone lives nearby/ one the way and is willing to carpool, then I'll ask them if they can pick up a few students on the way and back. If there's a group of student living in the same area and they all do not have transportation, then I'll arrange for them to take the bus as a group. To make things easier, all of those that are going to take the bus can meet up as a group right after school and everyone can take the bus together.
As for restaurants, it will be impossible to find the perfect restaurant that is close to everyone, because like i said before, not everyone lives in the same area. What i can do is pick an area that is well known to everyone so they at least know where the restaurant is located. Right now I'm thinking either a restaurant by AHS or in Southcenter (those two places are both fairly familiar to everyone). I will also be asking around to see what people's preference on food is and there price range. This will help me pick a restaurant that suits most people.

Barrier 3: Getting people to plan, set up and clean up (if necessary)

The party may be a great idea but set up and clean up may be a dread to many people. Finding someone to do those things might be hard but these things are necessary. To reduce the amount of time that we will have to spend on clean up and set up, i will try to pick a place that's will to clean up after us and if not, then i will make sure that the place is kept somewhat clean during the course of the party (everyone picking up after themselves and keeping scraps to a minimum). I will be in charge of both set up and clean up so there will be at least one person doing it and i can make sure to pulls some close Friends to come early and stay back to help with set up and clean up. I will be constantly reminding the set up and clean up people about their job so they don't forget about it and in the unlikely chances that they do forget, I will be willing to do it all by myself.
That way I can ensure that at least someone is setting up and the party will be ready to go by the time people arrive.  I (and others helping out) will also be there with enough time to set up so we don't need to rush and end up forgetting to do some specific things.

October 12 (Blogging Entry #2)

In class today, I was telling Elizabeth Ong about my ideas for this project and she gave me some opinions on the idea. She decided to follow my project and we started discussing what we can do for the Christmas Party. She also gave me some options for mentors. My next step is to ask around for some options regarding the location of the party and what would be the activities happening there. We are still deciding if we should play white elephant or secret Santa. If secret Santa, then we'll have to plan really well to make sure everyone who gives a gift will end up getting a gift too.

To-Do List:

-Ask around for location options/ how far are people willing to travel
-Find a mentor (shiroma?)
-Decide on a holiday game and organize it
-Take survey on how many people are interested in going

Christmas Party (Senior Class)

Project Start Date: November 21th
Project End Date: December 17th

Milestones:

Deadlines in November:
  • 27th: Have data gathered about the seniors (preference on location, activities, estimation of attendees).
  • 29th: Final decision on location and make reservations if necessary

Deadlines in December:
  • 2rd: Announce the get-together to the senior class with all details included (NOTAM?)
  • 4th: Finalization's (who's attending and organize secret Santa/ white elephant)
  • Week of Dec. 17th: get organized about transportation, food and make sure everyone knows about the games.
Mentor: Mr. Shiroma?

Vision:

My vision for this project to help bond everyone in the senior class. My idea is to plan a Christmas/Holiday party before winter break so this can be a fun way for everyone in the senior class to get together and just have fun. At this party, we are going to have food (location might be a restaurant), play games (secret Santa or white elephant) and also just chill with each other. Elizabeth Ong will be helping me with this project. As the end result of this project, I will hope to see everyone having fun and talking to more people within their own class. It will look like people being relaxed and talking like we are all best friends and it'll feel like were are all close to each other. This project aligns with our mission and goals as a class because it will help with team bonding and team bonding is a key factor when everyone goes to the same school in the same year.
When working on this project, some obstacles that might come in my way are deciding on a location that fits everyone's needs, picking a day that most people can make it to and also how we will be organizing out games with so many people involve and make sure that no one is left out. For this project to be successful, we will need people to be willing to come to the party, a very organized person to keeps things on schedule.  For this project, i would only need one other person to help me and their role will mainly be there to help me keep things like surveys and suggestions organized (from the people) and also help book restaurants if necessary. They can also help me spread the word about this project to everyone in the Senior class and make sure everyone knows what is going on. To make sure this plan is successful, I will be doing a great deal of planning and asking for suggestions. I will also be paying close attention to the calendar to make sure I will get things done on time.
